The Bible is a compendium of books written by different authors, at different times, containing very diverse cultural traditions, genres and literary styles. The word bible comes from the Greek word βιβλίον (bible)which means scroll, papyrus or book.

These books were written approximately between 900 B.C. and 100 A.D. and contain traditions, doctrines and codes, as well as historical and prophetic accounts and songs of the people of Israel and early Christianity. The sacred scriptures were originally written in different languages: Aramaic, Hebrew and Greek; and today it is translated into all known languages.

The Bible is one of the oldest and most important books of mankindBut its transcendence lies not only in its historical value but also in the fact that it is considered by Jews and Christians as a sacred text containing the Word of God and his love for mankind. The Old Testament in the Catholic Bible comprises 46 books, divided into 1,083 chapters. These books contain the history of the Hebrew people, their faith, their laws, the teachings of the prophets and their traditions and prayers.

The New Testament contains 27 books and 260 chapters; it describes the life of Jesus, the letters of the apostles and proclaims the evangelical principles of Christianity.

Other versions of the Bible

The Bible is the most translated collection of sacred books in the history of mankind. After the Protestant Reformations Casiodoro de Reina (1569) with revision by Ciprino de Valera (1602) translates the Bible into Spanish from the original Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek texts, and is the most widely used by Spanish-speaking Protestants.

The Bible is the word of God and its content is unalterableThe number of books it contains may vary according to the canon established by the different Judeo-Christian churches. According to this and in general there are three main bibles:

  1. The Catholic Bible which contains 46 books in the Old Testament and 27 books in the New Testament.
  2. The Protestant Bible composed of 39 books in the Old Testament and 27 books in the New Testament.
